Dennis, who has the most experience, thinks nothing of driving all over the countryside in search of additional business. What amazes me is the amount of energy our team has, even though we are all over 60 years old. At a time when Class 1 railroads and major customers are retiring experienced railroaders and replacing them with recent college and MBA graduates it is helpful to have a graybeard involved in the process. Between Rian, Dan Gilchrist, Dennis Shaffer and myself we have over 140 years of marketing experience working for either railroads or railroad customers. As noted on p.6 of this issue we recently added Rian Nemeroff to our team. Our business development and marketing team is second to none in the shortline and regional railroad industry. We also were given that honor in 2011 and There are a number of reasons why Reading & Northern has been honored with these prestigious awards five times since One of those reasons is our focus on marketing and business development. On top of that we were named Regional Railroad of the Year last year by Railway Age, the only three time recipient of that great By: Wayne Michel, PRESIDENT honor. We also won this very prestigious award in 2014 and So that is three times in six years. The route would overlay with a portion of existing Route #1 as well as intercept at least three cross-town routes (Burton Street, 28th Street, and 44th Street).2 Table of Contents Keeping On Track. Traffic signal priority (TSP) is also proposed along the route. The proposed service would operate with ten-minute headways during peak periods and 15-minute headways during weekday off-peak periods. The vehicles, like the stations, would be branded. Ten low-floor vehicles are proposed for the system (including spares). Station spacing in the CBD is based on serving the employment and educational clusters. North of 28th Street, the station spacing is approximately one-half mile. South of 28th Street, the stations are spaced an average of one each mile. The stations would have real-time passenger information and ticket vending machines for off-board fare collection. The project would include a maximum of 18 stations. Mary’s Heath Campus, Grand Rapids Community College, Medical Mile, and the core of downtown employment. This is the prime reason the routing downtown circulates directly to St. A key goal of the project is providing access for the population surrounding Division Avenue, an economically distressed corridor with a high percentage of transit dependent population, to job and educational opportunities especially in the Grand Rapids CBD. In the CBD, the route includes the three highest employment concentrations, the Grand Rapids Community College, and Central Station (the downtown hub for existing radial local buses). The BRT vehicles would be street running along Division Avenue from the Grand Rapids Central Business District (CBD) to 60th Street (which is the current boundary of the service area for The Rapid). The proposed Silver Line BRT project is approximately 9.6 miles in length. ![]() The Interurban Transit Partnership (The Rapid), in cooperation with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), proposes to operate a bus rapid transit system (Silver Line BRT) in the Cities of Grand Rapids, Wyoming, and Kentwood, Michigan.
